Class Descriptions

We are unable hold a space without payment and required documentation.  Children must be at least 5 yrs to attend the Puppy Level and 10 to attend all other levels. Our training method is positive reinforcement (motivators are treats, voice, touch and body language).  Payment is by cheque, cash, money order Visa, or MasterCard.  We apologize but we do not accept $100.00 bills.  Puppy level courses are 6 weeks long. All others are 7 (All classes are 50 minutes long).

Puppy Level:  In order to attend classes, puppies must be old enough to have had their 2nd set of shots (usually when they are 12 – 14 weeks), and should be no more than 20 weeks.

The critical learning period of puppies to learn their social skills is between birth to 20 weeks of age.  Attending a puppy social skills class will help prevent problems from developing into their adult years and will help ensure a socially-sound pet.  This class is one of the single most important things that you can do for your puppy!

These are the things we do in the Puppy Level:  1) Puppies interact with other families, 2) off leash play with other puppies, 3) social handling, 4) emulate nail clipping, 5) appropriate greeting techniques, 6) confidence building, 7) recalls (come command including sit and pay attention), 8) discussion of behaviour issues such as crating, preventing separation anxiety and barking.

Beginner:  Teach your dog to communicate with you effectively, learn technique and how to be consistent. This is an introductory course for the basic obedience commands – stay, wait, recalls (come), off, leave-it, give, watch-me and heeling.

Intermediate:  Ah ha!  You’re up for a bit of a challenge you say?  This challenging class combines previous training with distractions, distance training and hand signals.  New skills include lead pulls, return around, off-leash recalls and recalls with distractions.

Advanced:  Polish, proof and fine-tune your dog.  You will learn:  drop on recall, off-leash figure 8 heeling, long sits and downs, group stays, stand for examination and off-leash work.

Rally Obedience:  “Rally-O” was developed to emphasize fun and excitement providing a more natural approach to the obedience performance, accentuating attitude rather than performance.  Many rules were incorporated from the Association of Professional Dog Trainer-US (APDT) and the American Kennel Club (AKC).   For more information on Rally "O" click "here"

Canine Good Neighbour: (Beginner Level Pre-Requisite):   This class is designed to teach your dog to act mannerly in any situation. A title, and certificate are awarded upon successful completion of the program.  Your dog should be solid in Beginner Level exercises before attending this course.  The test is included in the final class!  Be prepared to receive compliments from your neighbours and friends!

* A course to prepare for your official  test for the CGN certificate.

Tricks: If you are looking for something fun to do with your dog, join our Tricks Class!  We will be learning how to use clickers as training aids in this 7 week course.  Here are some things you could learn: Say your prayers, crawl, scratch your nose, rollover, jump, touch, bow, go to sleep, backup, wave, spin and more!

To reserve your class space, please submit your completed registration form, payment and a copy of your dog's proof of vaccination.    Questions?  email lifesruff@rogers.com or telephone (905-201-5050).  Your registration will be confirmed by email.
